 rlene A. Carter (Miss Happy Foot) is founder of POETRY PIZZAZZ PLUS!, a demonstrative and informative reading-centered program in which the
language of poetry is explored through dramatizations, recitations, and
rhythmic interpretations. Arlene has taught reading and English in
Pittsylvania County Schools since 1974. In August 1996 she earned her
doctorate in reading education from The University of Virginia. She has
worked as an assistant professor in the reading department of James Madison
University and as an adjunct professor at Piedmont Virginia Community
College. Her passion for poetry is shared through presentations at schools
(k-college), seminars, conferences, workshops, and other special events.
Participants join "Miss Happy Foot" in high-energy poetry activities
designed to encourage movement, thinking, and creativity. Musical
instruments are included. Happy Dolls are used as tools to promote character
traits such as love, honesty, respect, trustworthiness, and etc. Currently
she is on the faculty as an English teacher in the Martinsville City Schools
district.The following projects are in motion: (1) JUST RIGHT: A Poetry Pizzazz Plus! Writing Project, a workbook for classroom teachers geared toward enhancing writing skills, (2) PROJECT UNIVERSE: a 15-part Cd/Dvd series, and (3) PROJECT BLACK BOOTS: a program to provide on-the-job training to "at risk" young people (apprentices) in the area of renovating and/or building houses under the guidance and supervision of a licensed contractor.  er books, Cracking Walnuts & Other Goodies, Tucked In Real Real Tight, and Between Nighttime Dreams: A Mama-Daughter Journey, and Soppin' Gravy at the Kitchen Table, are reflections of some of her varied experiences from childhood to adulthood. She has also published Love, Laughter, & Tears: An SOL Parental Involvement Activity Book. ou Are Not Alone: Making The Journey Through Alzheimer’s With A Loved One, her most recent work, was released by Publisher’s Syndication, International in 2003

and encouraging young prison inmates, and communicating with Robert Epps (a
quadriplegic in Meadowview Nursing Home in Northfield, New Jersey) and
